In this study, examples of semantic changes preceding formal changes in particular grammatical changes in the history of Korean will be presented, and their reasons will be discussed. First, using the dative subject construction, I will investigate the mismatch between the grammatical role and the case marking strategy. Second, changes in the words ‘웃기다’ and ‘틀리다’ are used to show the retention of previous inflectional patterns despite a change in part of speech. I will also argue that the empty morphemes and the late change in the order of prefinal endings are transitional forms that appear because the meaning change and the form change did not take place simultaneously. This discrepancy in language change suggests that inflected words are not always generated online. The speaker has a propensity to maintain the linguistic form he or she heard. Hence, there are instances in which words composed of grammatical morphemes should not be interpreted logically and systematically. This is why we need to understand the history of language in order to develop a comprehensive synchronic grammar.
