The purposes of this study include 1) to examine public pension schemes in Egypt and Korea with a special focus on pension fund governance and management, and 2) to provide policy implications for the Egyptian pension system based on the Korean experience. Population ageing threatens the financial sustainability of public pension systems both in Egypt and Korea. The Egyptian Parliament passed a pension reform law in 2010. The reform law, however, was abolished after the Egyptian Revolution of 2011, and the new government is preparing for a new pension reform plan. This study examines the current state of, and issues in the Egyptian pension system, and provides policy implications from the Korean experience. More specifically, it discusses policy alternatives to enhance pension coverage and adequacy as well as those to strengthen pension fund governance and management.
