The growing interest in marine nature is clearly evident among people visiting coastal and marine areas, and marine tourism is being recognised as one of the most important factors of the marine economy.
The aim of this study is to discuss how we can develop marine tourism as a practical alternative for our falling coastal economy. The main controversial points examined include the importance of sustainability in marine tourism, whether MPAs can be a measurement of promoting marine tourism and how MPAs can be applied to enhance island tourism in Korea.
The study shows that firstly, environmental conditions and security on sea are vital for the sustainment of marine tourism. Secondly, marine protected areas play a key role in improving marine tourism through invigorating self recovery functions of the marine ecosystem. Thirdly, the National Marine Park system should be modified and make it available to cover underwater habitats. Finally, the policy program which encourage various leisure-experience activities around islands should be specially designed to support the island village.
