The purpose of the study was to investigate the effect of the 12-week intervention targeting at an physical activity volume of 10,000 steps per day on obesity index, cardiovascular disease risk factors and health-related fitness in middle-aged women. The subjects had two clinics visits for the measurements of obesity index, cardiovascular disease risk factors and health-related fitness prior to and after the intervention program with an overnight fast, respectively. Paired t-tests were used to test the statistical significances of changed scores in the measured parameters, and multivariate linear regression analyses were used to predict any significant factors in determining individual variations of the measured parameters. The following results were found from the current study: 1) The intervention program with a physical activity of 10,000 steps per day resulted in significant improvements of body weight (P=0.001), BMI(P=0.001), percent body fat(P=0.001), waist circumference(P=0.001), WHR(P=0.005), lean body mass(P=0.028) in middle-aged women; 2) The intervention program with a physical activity of 10,000 steps per day induced significant improvements of systolic blood pressure(P=0.001), triglycerides(P=0.031), fasting glucose(P=0.005), and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol(P=0.001) in middle-aged women; 3) The intervention program with a physical activity of 10,000 steps per day resulted in significant improvements of cardio/respiratory fitness(P=0.008), sit-and-reach(P=0.003), sit-up(P=0.001) in middle-aged women. The current findings of the study showed that the physical intervention targeting 10,000 steps/day is an effective and practical means of improving body fatness, cardiovascular disease risk factors and health-related fitness in middle-aged women.
