Paul’s Quotation of the Old Testament in Romans 12-15

Scholars have paid much?attention to Paul’s logic in Romans 1-11 which is full of OT quotations. However, enough research has?not been done regarding Paul’s Old Testament quotations in Romans 12-15. This paper probes the function of the OT?quotations by Paul in Romans 12-15, which includes paraenesis towards the Gentile and Jewish Christians in Rome. When the Apostle Paul quotes the?Hebrew text or LXX with frequent alternation, we have to strive to find the reasons for change by investigating both the context of the quoted OT passages and Paul’s theological-contextual-stylistic purposes. The present researcher utilizes the following steps to obtain the goal of this paper: (1) studies on the 10 instances of?OT quotations in Romans 12-15 by comparing GNT5 with the LXX, and?if necessary, a comparison with the?Hebrew text included, and?(2) examining both Paul’s method of OT interpretation and the function of the OT for Paul’s argument. Through these steps we come to the conclusion that Paul, who excelled at Christological and typological exegesis, primarily relies on the LXX instead of the?Hebrew text and alters the OT texts for his purpose by considering his Jewish and Gentile readers who must be united in Christ the Lord and Judge.
