The story of Jesus’ temptation in the wilderness can be found in all three synoptic gospels. The story of Jesus’ temptation in the Gospel of Mark is notable both for its brevity and its harshness. Jesus’ life is viewed as one typified by continued subjection to experiences of temptation. The author of the Gospel of Mark also remembered Jesus as one who had faced and endured temptation.At that time Christians were taught that all persons who strived to walk the way of the Lord would be put to the test.Mark depicted Jesus, his disciples and the audiences as tempted not only in the wilderness at the start of their ministry, but also throughout the course of their life. The way of Lord is fraught with tests or temptations. Throughout the gospel, Jesus has shown himself to triumph over temptation by being watchful. He is in a strong position to tell his disciples to do likewise. The twelve act in ways that threaten to seduce Jesus away from the way of Lord, or to obstruct him on it.The temptation motif is intertwined with the motif of blindness and sight. The disciples put Jesus to the test because their minds have been blinded to keep them from perceiving the necessity of the way of Lord. They fail the test, but Jesus triumphs. Jesus directs his message about impending trials to the twelve and to those who accompany them. The disciples to whom Jesus speaks in the Gospel of Mark include the twelve disciples and all of us forever after who try to follow Jesus on the way of Lord.
