This is a comparative study of The Blithedale Romance and The Portrait of a Lady with an emphasis on the heroines’ unconventionality and their ideals for social reformation. Zenobia actively involves herself in a simple and natural life but male antagonists’ disagreement along with her own pride, imprudence, and inconsistency frustrates her utopian prospect. Having been confronted with Hollingsworth’s masculine egotism and Coverdale’s skeptical gaze, Zenobia inevitably discards her ideals and becomes a tragic drowned heroine. Her death symbolizes the failure of the utopian communal life but reveals the necessity of individual moral innovation for truly reformed society. Isabel, in her choice of a proper husband, reveals her desire for a free and independent life. Instead of choosing a “proprietor”, she decides to marry a poor “man” who has very delicate taste. When Isabel realizes the mistake and failure in her choice, she meditates on her ignorance and accepts the painful life as it is. She regards responsibility more important than her own happiness, which reveals her inner growth and moral integrity. The unconventional heroines’ failure and pain shows not only the pressure of social prejudice but also the necessity of individual moral innovation for social reformation.
