The purpose of this study was to examine the microbial contamination levels of sponge and powder puff in cushion foundation, for which the highest sales were recorded in 2013, in an effort to ensure the sanitary use of cushion foundation among consumers. A total of 40 cushion foundations were distributed to college women in Kwangju Metropolitan City, and they were asked to use the product twice a day for one month. Then, the sponges and puffs in the foundations were collected to check if there were aerobic bacteria, fungi or pathogenic bacteria present. The study results found the following: In the puffs, Aerobic bacteria and yeast were found. In terms of pathogenic bacteria, Staphylococcus aureus was detected without E. coli. In the sponges, however, both Aerobic bacteria and Staphylococcus aureus were observed. In addition, puffs contained greater amounts of bacteria than sponges which means that microbial contamination mostly occurred via hands. Many cosmetics manufacturers have primarily emphasized the effects and strength of their products. However, the wrong usage or management of cosmetics and makeup tools can make bacteria proliferate rapidly, causing skin problems. Therefore, manufacturers need to provide extra puffs and explain the necessity and method of sterilizing the products to consumers on high-visibility labels. Moreover, beautyrelated educational institutes need to cover how to use and disinfect cosmetics in a correct and safe manner.
