The purpose of this study aimed to understand how undergraduates' interest in appearance affected the efficacy of image making. To this end, 340 copies of a questionnaire were distributed to students of S University in Seoul and a total of 311 copies were used for the final analysis, excepting 29 that had insufficient answers. The results showed that both male and female students had a keen interest in appearance and the sub-categories of this interest were: interest in clothes; skin and changes in looks; figures. The results revealed that women had a greater interest than men in appearance (t = -11.769, p<.001). With regard to the efficacy of image making, men and women both had high scores with little difference in the scores. On the other hand, with regard to sub-factors related to the efficacy of image making: an attitude of awareness (t = -3.060, p<.01); ability to manage facial expressions (t = -3.954, p<.001), in these cases women had much higher scores than men. It has been proved that undergraduates' interest in appearance affects the efficacy of image making (F = 31.345, p<.001). With regard to sub-categories related to this interest, it was revealed that interest in clothes influenced all sub-factors of the efficacy of image making: expressional confidence (β =. 368, p<.001); an attitude of awareness (β = .452, p<.001);ability to manage facial expressions (β = .392, p<.001). This implies that the greater the interest in clothes, the higher was the level of expressional confidence, attitude of awareness and ability to manage facial expressions follows. Also, interest in changes in look, one of the sub-factors of interest in appearance, affected expressional confidence (β = -.148, p<.05) and ability to manage facial expressions (β = .187,p<.01). This implies that the higher the interest in skin and changes in look, the weaker was expressional confidence and the higher was ability to manage facial expressions. In conclusion, women revealed a greater degree of interest in appearance than men, but there was no major difference with regard to efficacy of image making. Thus, it seems to be necessary for both men and women to make an effort to increase their expressional confidence for image making. In addition, the study found that the high interest in clothes, among other factors, was especially important in increasing the efficacy of image making.
