Today, museums are transforming into exhibition spaces equipped with state-of-the-art techniques through which visitors can learn about and appreciate scientific principles and historical facts on their own, breaking from the traditional focus of exhibitions on collection, preservation, and display. Showcase examples include floating holograms, virtual reality, and projection mapping techniques. A 3D floating hologram system allows the visitors to feel and examine an exhibit, as is possible with augmented reality (AR), without wearing special equipment; it is widely used to present and promote cultural and historical heritage objects. Virtual reality (VR) allows visitors to explore a heritage site virtually. Projection mapping offers visitors a realistic experience of traveling through time, with true-tolife effects created by superimposing 3D images on real or replicated objects using multiple projectors, immersing visitors in stories about heritage or architecture.
