Opening in 2012, the National Museum of Korean Contemporary History was the first museum devoted to history in the nation. In June 2020, the Museum extensively renovated its History Gallery, which is its permanent exhibition hall. The History Gallery has impressed audiences with its unusual planning and composition to display historical facts in a more emotional way. Through collaboration with a variety of artists, it facilitates better understanding and remembrance of Korean history.
The History Gallery consists of three major parts organized in chronological order. This review of the History Gallery takes a designer’s point of view and comments on how the spatial composition affects traffic flow of the space. In addition, this review looks at how the visual elements make communication easier, how technical expressions and emotional approaches are used in the space, etc. Finally, the author suggests the way ahead for the gallery in the future.
Audience perceptions of history can differ greatly by how historical facts are interpreted and creatively expressed in a given space. In light of this, this review discusses the overall composition of the History Gallery in terms of exhibition design.
