The purpose of this study was to examine thematic issues related tocultural diversity by analyzing works of a contemporary Korean artist intheir authentic context, and then drawing implications for art education. The pragmatic view of art as a reflection of life experience is explored, aswell as the notion that contemporary art can be regarded as visualevidence of contemporary life circumstances and real life issues areshared with viewers. From this foundation, the meaning and value of artas a reflection of life experience and the function of art criticism forunderstanding art were examined through the works of one contemporaryKorean artist. Using a contextual art criticism method, the analysisfocused on issues of cultural diversity as expressed by the artist throughher art, as well as the implications of the results for art education. Theoutcome of this study suggests ways that art educators in the classroomcan facilitate students’ understandings and expressions of issues relatedto cultural diversity in their society and show an example of usingcontemporary art as a good recourse for its practice.
