Marianne Moore was one of the early modernist poets whose poetic innovations helped establish the twentieth century American poetry. Moore attuned to the visual in her construction of poetry as her patterned stanzas appeared on the page and was relentless in revising her work. The language in Moore’s poetry is innovative, complex, and often syllabic by reconstituting the relationship of prose and verse. Moore’s radically new prosody locates her in the stream of modernism and produces poems in which her woman’s perception challenges conventional approaches to truth, reality, and nature. This paper explores how Moore’s experimental poetic technique opens up the imagination and the source of creativity and probes the world through poetry. It draws, in particular, on animal imagery in order to demonstrate the various ways in which animals elude human definition with their own particular behaviors and features. While seeking a fusion of the imaginary and the real in her poetry, Moore introduces disruptions in meaning and executes a woman’s epistemology in which both order and inclusiveness are valued. Moore’s animal poems exemplify her perception, a woman’s world view, and illustrate how animals live with female values of nurturing, intuition and an instinctive affinity with the environment
