The current study investigates the usage of five human nouns (i.e.,‘ai’ child, ‘aki’ baby, ‘chinkwu’ friend, ‘nyesek’ fellow, and ‘nom’ chap), in Korean, in referring to non-human/non-animate referents, the underlying metaphorical process of the realization of human nouns, and its discourse effects. Two metaphorical concepts are introduced: (1) Non-human/ non-animate referent is child/baby concept and (2) Non-human/non-animate referent is friend/fellow/chap. Each metaphorical concept shows similar but slightly different conceptual mappings from its source domain to target domain, which allows the speaker to convey additional information in the use of human nouns, including the speakers’ evaluation, positioning, and alignment. Therefore, the metaphorical process of those concepts can automatically establish speaker stance towards the referent by using the human nouns for non-human referent. Last, but not least, the metaphorical process of personification involved in the realization of human nouns for non-human referents suggests that the exploration of social meanings in variationist sociolinguistics may benefit greatly from taking into account the process underlying the association between the variation and its formation of social meanings.
