This paper comprehensively analyzes the degree, mode and position changes of China and Japan's manufacturing industries participating in the GVC(global value chain) based on the input-output table data. Which is calculating the backward and forward vertical specialization rate and GVC_position index. The results show that: Most of the time, the proportion of China's domestic value-added (DVA) in China's manufacturing exports is lower than that of Japan's in the same period, and its profitability is low. The backward specialization of China's manufacturing industry rose first and then fell, the forward specialization rate continued to rise; It means that China's participation levels in GVC are rising. At present, China's high-tech industries are still participating in the GVC in the backward model, in contrast the mid-high and mid-low-tech industries have completed the ascent of the value chain and began to participate in the GVC by forward model. Although the Japanese manufacturing industry has been impacted by the Abe economic model, its high-tech industries still participate in the GVC by forward model. The foreign value-added of China's manufacturing industry is dominated by final products, Such as production, processing and assembly activities. The foreign value-added of Japan's manufacturing industry is dominated by intermediate products, mainly producing essential parts and components. China's manufacturing industry is located downstream of the GVC, but the upward trend is noticeable. Although Japanese manufacturing is located upstream of the GVC, there is a particular downward trend. Based on the above research conclusions, this article puts forward corresponding suggestions to China and Japan respectively, and proposes a prospect for future research for the current situation of the world under the COVID-19 epidemic
