The purpose of this study is to examine formal and content characteristics of university news coverages in daily newspapers of Jeju area. To achieve this purpose, characteristics of university news coverages were analyzed by considering types of reports in local newspapers and formal compositions, such as news insertion locations and forms of information, and identifying tones of reports, primary doers, central topics and values of news. The contents from a total of 1442 university news coverages were analyzed for a year from March 1st 2015 to February 28th 2016. As a result, straight articles occupied the largest proportion of reports, and it was followed by commentaries/analyses and columns/verdicts. People section occupied almost half the news insertion locations, and it was followed by culture section and general news section. As a result of analyzing the differences in forms of information among newspapers were analyzed, it was found that university news coverages were mostly published through news releases, and based on this data, articles were written through commentaries or analyses. Neutral reports occupied the biggest proportion of tones of university news coverages, and the proportion of positive reports was nine times higher than the proportion of negative reports. When analyzing doers or groups that accounted for a large proportion of university news coverages, universities had the highest frequency, and it was followed by professors and students. University news coverages put emphasis on university event promotions and personal achievements overall. Moreover, the influence emphasizing prizes in competitions and paper prizes and excellence of research results and the usefulness of various event promotions on campus frequently appeared as values of news. This implies that local daily newspapers pay less attention to university news coverages, and for newspapers, universities are not regarded as important news beats.
