This article argues that China’s strategy in the South China Sea is more offensive in nature, while its approach to the East China Sea is relatively defensive. It raises the question of why the tension in one dispute is relatively stable while the other is increasing substantially. An analysis of Chinese strategy in the East and South China Seas, Chinese military and strategic doctrines, and military capability will be used to make the argument that there is a distinctive divergence in strategy. Furthermore, the implication of this would suggest a lack of continuity in Chinese thought and that the U.S. and its regional allies should adjust their strategic thinking accordingly.
