This study examines the diachronic aspect of the Japanese formal nouns ‘mono’ and their corresponding expressions in korean. the data analyzed in this study are Japaneses and Korean text books and translation materials form the end of the 19th century to the beginning of the 21th century. Results are as follows. Firstly, reparading the distribution of semantic characteristics, ‘mono’ was used as a real noun, a formal noun, a substitute for a real noun, modality usages. However, in terms of frequency, in the end of the 19th century, a substitute noun was the representative semantic usage, whereas in he beginning of the 21th century, modality usage showed the highest response frequency. Next, in terms of corresponding expressions in Korean, While the correspondence frequency of ‘ges’ and ‘person’ was high in the data from the end of the 19th century, the frequency of appearance of ‘verb’ and ‘ges’ was high in the 21st century data. Because Japanese modality usage is translated verb in Korean. Secondly ‘ges’ is used as a corresponding word in almost all usages. Thirdly, it was confirmed that ‘to iu mono’ patterns was the changing stage from formal nouns to modality usage.
