This paper aims to study how contextuality of Hall (1959) is related to the written communication and which elements of culture affect the language conversion, translation. In order to do this, the translations of the Diamond S?tra which is often mentioned as a jewel of religious literature and is also one of the most influential sutras of Buddhism are selected by the difference of the contextuality ? the high context of the Chinese version translated by Kum?raj?va (402), the Korean version by Jogye Buddhism sector (2013) and the low context of the English version by Conze (1994). By comparison of these texts, the contextual variations are captured with the concrete examples, and these are analyzed by Hall’s contextuality and its specific subdimensions ? overtness of message, locus position, and directionality. The comparative analysis of translations consequently, confirms the contextual variations existing in the course of language conversion process. Practically this paper implies that the difficulties in understanding the Diamond S?tra of Korean version partly come from differences in the contextuality of the language system and partly from the differences in the cultural background of the receiving language.
