The purpose of this study is to review the consistency problem identified in the multi-part-of-speech words description of the ‘Standard Korean Dictionary’. There are two major problems in multi-part-of-speech words' dictionary description: ‘arbitrary processing’ and ‘multi-part-of-speech words' homonyms processing’.
First, the dictionary treats multi-part-of-speech words arbitrarily. According to the processing principle of multi-part-of-speech words, It is clearly used as the part of speech, and if the combination of postposition is not allowed, it is treated as multi-part-of-speech words. However, this principle does not apply consistently to all headings. In the case of ‘pyeong-saeng’ and ‘bam-nat’, ‘jeong-mal, cham, cham-mal’ and ‘jin-jja’, even though they are headwords with the same condition, sometimes they are treated as multi-part-of-speech words, and sometimes they are not.
On the other hand, dictionaries sometimes treat multi-part-of-speech words as homonyms. According to the discriminant principle of polysemys and homonyms, if there is a semantic correlation and has the same etymology, It's not a homonyms, it's a polysemys.. However, this principle does not apply consistently to all headings. ‘a-ni’, ‘ppun’, ‘dae-ro’, ‘bo-da’ are all treated as homonyms, and these are either multi-part-of-speech words with a clear semantic connection or the same etymology.
These problems eventually lead to one big problem. It is that the multi-part-of-speech words are not consistently described in the ‘Standard Korean Dictionary’. ‘The National Institute of Korean Language’(2014a/2014b) is revealing the processing principle of multi-part-of-speech words. Therefore, there is no problem in itself to include multi-part-of-speech words in the ‘Standard Korean Dictionary’. However, it is clear problems that these standards are not applied consistently.
