The Purpose of this paper is to investigates the evolution process of capability through New Product Development (NPD) projects at Renault Samsung Motors (RSM). Dynamic capability for NPD of an auto-maker is a precondition not just for its survival but for trade because it enables a foreign-owned auto-maker to gain support from parent firms by developing its own firm-specific capability within the Multinational Corporations (MNCs) network. The research has been based on ethnographic approach, including participant observations, interviews, and document analysis, the trajectory and nature of technology transfer, organizational structures, and the key functional divisions are analyzed through the four NPD projects. We have found that Firm-level capability can be created with a varying degree among key functions that participated in the development of new models. A congruent organizational structure of subsidiary is a necessary condition to facilitate capability building so that mandate can be obtained. An important managerial implication is that a foreign-owned automaker needs to secure capability in a specific function and expand it into other areas considering limited resources. If a foreign-owned automaker solely sticks to a specific functional area, it will be vulnerable and survival may not be guaranteed. This study sets itself apart from previous ones in that it investigates the evolution process of capability at a foreign-owned auto-maker, which has an impact on trade. Findings have a significant ramification on Korea trade because the Korean automotive industry, including three foreign-owned auto-makers, accounts for a 13 per cent of its export and a 12 per cent of GDP.
