The aim of this study is to seek the aesthetic meaning of grotesque body expressions which have been shown in different modes throughout the long history of dance. In this dissertation, three works of dance are selected and discussed. The image of death, the border with humans and fragmented body expressions are analyzed to observe the feeling of ‘grotesque’ which is widely used as ‘something distorted, ugly and ridiculous’ in real works of dance. The result shows that the grotesque mostly occurs in the borderline where two themes in opposite ends such as life and death, love and death, humans and dolls and disassembled body parts meet each other and mix together. It also shows that the exploration of a ‘lifeless body’ resulted from three grotesque themes of dance is used as a creative strategy to redefine the concept of body and moves that dynamically change and assemble instead of rejection or denial of a body.
