In this papers, the reasons for Bian’s refutation of romantic charm theory are re analyzed by means of his work Rudimentary knowledge of Du Fu’s metrical verses. Through Bian’s interpretations, his pursuing for the gist of poems and his ideas of Poem writing、aesthetic feature and appraciation can be explored more deeply and specifically. In this way, the reasons why he had a sharp and critical attitude towards the theory of romantic charm are attempted to be found. In chapter 2, by using poetry creation as the breakthrough point, it is revealed that Bian’s refutation of romantic charm theory is focused on its absence of “tempermament”. However, the study on Wang Shizhen’s works of poetry comment, such as 《Dai Jing Tang Shi Hua》, gives a different conclusion. Wang’s concept of “tempermament” is not as narrow as Bian had criticized. Then, by analyzing and summarizing the idea about “tempermament” which Bian has presented in his work, along with Du Fu’s metrical verses, which were classified as the works of “tempermament” or “romantic charm”. Comparing with Wang’s concept of “tempermament”, Bian’s is obviously narrower, and the spirits of two are distinctly different, which leads to the principal reason of his refutation of romantic charm theory. In chapter 3, Bian’s refutation on the idea that Poems of “romantic charm” cannot be interpreted is introduced and discoursed. His propose of “unfolding the concealed meaning”, as a matter of fact, is an appreciation theory which inherited from his concept of “tempermament”. Finally, specific examples were given to experience how Bian was “unfolding the concealed meaning”.
