The aim of this study is to build a taxonomy for the factors influencing the affects and emotions of the audience experiencing 4D content. 4D content is the audio-visual content with 4D effects such as the motion effect of the seat, water, wind, fog, light, and scent. The previous study explored the factors influencing the affects and emotions of the 4D content audience through brainstorming, literature survey, and card sorting. The factors were grouped according to their common properties and organized hierarchically to construct a taxonomy of the factors influencing affects and emotions. However, it was necessary to derive additional factors because the taxonomy had limitations that various factors identified in previous studies were not sufficiently included and the empirical data from the audience were not reflected. In addition, the taxonomy needed to improve clarity in the factor names and classification criteria. The new taxonomy for the attributing factors influencing the affects and emotions of the 4D content audiences was derived through processes including a systematic literature review, an open card sorting, and an interview with 4D content audiences. The 146 factors in the taxonomy were classified into 5 major categories and 26 subcategories. The five major categories consist of experience, environment, stimulus design, personal, and content characteristics. In the future, it is necessary to investigate how each factor influences the affects and emotions of the audience. The results of the study might help to effectively provide the audience’s affective and emotional experiences through designing 4D content.
