Lee, Yuk―Sa is widely known as a nationalist literary man and also an independence activist. However, his anarchistic activities have not been fully known. Even though there are some researches on the anarchistic characteristics of Lee, Yuk―Sa’s poetry, his poetry has been just known as nationalism literature in the literary world and the site of education. Of course, certainly, Lee, Yuk―Sa’s life and poetry hold onto the nationalism. However, when Lee, Yuk―Sa’s poetry was interpreted only in the nationalistic perspective based on the resistance, the possibility of other interpretations was declined.
The close connection between Lee, Yuk―Sa’s life and anarchism is the empirical fact that has been widely known without objections. Even though the relation between Lee, Yuk―Sa’s life and anarchism has been historically recognized, his life as an anarchist has not been specially noticed. As Lee, Yuk―Sa’s life was in the spotlight in the perspective of nationalism, Lee, Yuk―Sa became widely known as a nationalist poet. The general public’s awareness of Lee, Yuk―Sa’s anarchistic activities is very insignificant. However, the fact that Lee, Yuk―Sa joined the Heuguhoe when he was studying in Japan, or that fact that he participated in the independence movement as a member of heroic corps proves that he had a deep self―consciousness as an anarchist.
In Lee, Yuk―Sa’s life, the anarchism was not fully highlighted because of the destiny of anarchism that disappeared in the history. The anarchism refusing the systematic organization gradually lost its power and then disappeared in the history, which is led to the evaluation of Lee, Yuk―Sa in the perspective of nationalism, instead of anarchism. Due to the declined anarchism, the Korean history of anarchistic independence movement has been reduced than the reality.
However, the Korean anarchism and the Korean history of anarchistic independence movement in the Japanese colonial era and the liberated space, had the considerably wide base and competence. In the Japanese colonial era, a lot of intellectuals and writers worked as anarchists and anarchist literary men by sympathizing with the anarchism and anarchism literature. Therefore, the fact that Lee, Yuk―Sa devoted himself to the anarchism is important in relation to the independence movement and national consciousness. It was extremely natural for Lee, Yuk―Sa who took the anarchism as the ideological basis to contain his desire for independence in his works. Therefore, Lee, Yuk―Sa’s longing and will for liberty should be interpreted in the perspective of anarchism.
