The main causes of the 3rd Indo-Pakistan War in 1971 were the deterioration of the Indo-Pakistan rivalry and the failure of Pakistan’s nation-building efforts. Yet the Cold War rivalry between the two superpowers, the US efforts to open up China, and the emerging interests of the Soviet Union in South Asia all greatly contributed to the origin, the process, and the result of the war. In other words, the great power politics of the Cold War significantly influenced the local crisis that escalated to a full-scale war. The winner and the loser of the war, India and Pakistan respectively, both initiated nuclear development after the war. Thus, the conflict that happened a half century ago still provides important implications today regrading great power politics, nuclear proliferation, etc.
