How the host society integrates refugees and immigrants into it and creates a cooperative relationship with them will be challenging for its citizens and the government. One of the ways to tackle the problem is to examine how refugees and immigrants build their identities within the host society. Their social location, one's sense of belonging, and the social value system of the host society, affect immigrants' identity formation and their relationship with the host society. Although Korean studies on immigrants and refugees tend to analyse them from the perspective of the host society, researching the issue from the viewpoint of immigrants and refugees seems necessary. This article analyses the cases of Syriac Orthodox Christians, who became refugees and immigrants, and examines their identity formations in three different socio-political locations. The vital issue for building their collective identities is the memory of Sayfo, the persecution of Christians in Ottoman Anatolia during WWI. The study gives an insight into how immigrants and refugees claim their political rights and freedom by considering the political values in the host society.
