This paper aims at investigating how Korean speakers’ speech production and perception of English voiceless stops on the word boundaries are different from the English native speakers’. The production experiment conducted in this paper reveals that Korean speakers’ production of voiceless stops on the word boundaries is affected by their mother tongue. What makes Korean speakers’ production mainly distinctive from the English speakers’ is that not only does a vowel epenthesis take place in their production, but they also demonstrate a longer duration of the VOT and the voiceless stops than the native speakers. For the perception of continuous speech containing voiceless stops across word boundaries, the native listeners turn out to employ phonetic and acoustic cues such as aspiration to segment it into words. Through the perception experiment, this paper has figured out whether the Korean listeners have an ability to use such cues as the native listeners use for segmentation. The result indicates that they have difficulty segmenting a stream of the consecutive words in the stimuli into words for the perception due to the fact that they are not able to use as many acoustic and phonetic cues as the native speakers.
