Focusing on derived verbs composed of onomatopoeic stem and suffix “~めく(meku)”, this study investigated their inclusion in a widely recognized modern Japanese dictionary, their use in modern Japanese corpus Sketch Engine JaTenTen11, as well as the relationship between derived verbs and their corresponding onomatopoeia. It was found that “AB+めく(meku)” verbs derived from ABAB-pattern four-syllable onomatopoeia are most common in the modern japanese dictionary, accounting for approximately 47%, that only 8 out of the 36 derived verbs can be found in Sketch Engine and approximately 80% of “AB+めく(meku)” verbs cannot be found, and most “AB+めく(meku)” verbs have same collocation patterns from their corresponding onomatopoeia. It can be inferred from the study that most “AB+めく(meku)” verbs are no longer used in modern Japanese and they are closely related to their corresponding ABAB onomatopoeia.
