This article diagnoses the crisis of liberal democracy and seeks alternatives to overcome it. Since real democracy adopts liberal democracy, the crisis of democracy is a crisis of liberal democracy. Liberal democracy methodically adopts ‘individualism’ and ‘representation’. For this reason, liberal democracy simply collects individual poltical opinion aggregatively and selects a specific citizen as a representative, but the representative acts relatively freely from the citizen, resulting in a ‘crisis of representation’. Alternatives to overcome the crisis of liberal democracy include deliberative democracy and agonistic democracy. Deliberative democracy has limitations that it is difficult to overcome the crisis of liberal democracy because it is too trusting in rationality, ambiguous whether it is opinion formation or decision-making, and difficult to respect individual or group diversity. Agonistic democracy has the advantage of being able to increase political participation and respect the diversity of individuals or groups. This paper seeks theoretical possibilities to overcome the crisis of liberal democracy through a agonistic model of equal participation that can respect various identities of citizens beyond the ‘agreement without exclusion’ of deliberation model.
