This reading of Byron’s The Corsair (1814) concentrates on the complex ambiguities of the pirate Conrad, the protagonist of the narrative poem. The figure of the pirate was familiar to the reading and theatre-going public of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries in England, an iconic figure, who inspired fascination and fear alike through their greed, hyper-masculinity, and excessive brutality. In The Corsair, Byron revises the character of the pirate and transforms him into a more noble, less fierce, and more sexually ambiguous figure than popular imaginings permitted. This ambiguous rendition of Conrad was possible not only because Byron problematized the binary of the masculine and the feminine, but also because he called into question the fiction of the hyper-masculinity of the pirate. This essay begins by presenting a brief historical understanding of piracy and how pirates traversed the volatile boundary that separated gentlemen and outlaws. Next, I analyze the narrative and its poetic form, exploring how The Corsair is uniquely situated at the junction where the Romantic Byron and the Romantic conception of the pirate’s masculinity meet.
