Dongguanzouji is the work of Pei Ting Yu, who had lived between the end of Tang Dynasty and the period of Later Liang Dynasty. Although it is difficult to determine the exact date of writing, it is generally assumed that it was completed around the second year of Dashun(891) and presented the following year in the first year of Jingfu(892). The purpose of the writing was that Pei Ting Yu participated in compiling the annals of the three emperors during the reign of Xuanzong, Yizong, and Xizong, but when the writing of the annals failed, he collected historical materials from the time of Xuanzong and presented it to Zhaozong instead. This leads us to guess the characteristics of Dongguanzouji as an annal record, that is, as a short-term record of the public year of Xuanzong’s reign.
The third volume of Dongguanzouji consists of a total of 31 items. The length of each item is 51 characters in the shortest case and 316 characters in the longest case. Fifteen items, half of the 31 items, are concentrated in the 12th and 13th years of Dazhong period, that is, at the end of Xuanzong’s reign, confirming the lopsidedness of the records. In terms of content, each item is composed of an independent form with no interrelationships. The content related to the emperor and the content related to a specific individual consisted of about half of each with 13 items.
In terms of historical value, several characteristics can be identified. First of all, 24 items are confirmed only in the Dongguanzouji or considered as the earliest records among the other historical records. This is more than 75% of the entire second volume, which clearly shows the historical value of the third volume of Dongguanzouji.
The third volume of Dongguanzouji can be highly valued in that it is the only historical record focusing on Dazhong period. In addition, it is worth referring carefully to the fact that it is the only record that is not confirmed in other historical sources, as well as the fact that it has become a reference book for historical sources compiled later.
