Commuting to and from work is an unavoidable daily obligation for most working adults that can often be a long and unpleasant experience. This is primarily due to the current perception workers have of commuting being nothing more than a means to get from A to B, which leads many to think of this daily travel experience as nothing more than a boring waste of time. This explorative study aims to increase the perceived intrinsic value of traveling to and from work by shifting commuters’ current destination-centered travel perception into a journey-centered adventure. This is to be achieved by converting the function-focused mobility apps and services of today into experience-focused adventures. By incorporating various design approaches including gamification, Location-Based Services (LBS) and haptic technology, the undefined, repetitive ‘in-between’ that is commuting can be transformed into a new and exciting means of adventure, connection, and rejuvenation.
