The establishmen of dioplomatic relations between Korea and China in 1992 was one of the most momentous events in the two countries’ diplomatic history. Since the diplomatic relations between Korea and China, economic cooperation between Korea and China has increased rapidly, and over the past 30 years, Korea"s exports to China have increased 60 times and imports 38 times. Over the past 30 years, economic and trade cooperation has grown to benefit both sides. As of 2021, China"s share of foreign trade by major countries was 12.5% in the United States, 6.2% in Japan, and 6.0% in Korea, and Korea grew into China"s third-largest trading partner. As of 2021, the dependence on China among foreign trade in Gyeonggi-do was 32.8%, and 40.4% including Hong Kong.
China"s economic and industrial has advanced and economic cooperation between Korea and China also need to adapt to changes. Korea-China trade changed from light industry to higher value-added business. Undergoing industrial upgrading of China and rising cost within China can make structural changes in economic cooperation and become major reason of the recent decline Korea and Gyeonggi-do"s trade volume with China. China"s economic growth is slowdown, and it began to emerge as a voice of concern.
Korea and China have developed into a together for 30 years, but in the lately, the trade relations is highly likely to change due to changes in the Chinese government’s industrial strategy and trade environment. As Korea and China trade enters a new phase, an institutional basis for creating investment environment and adapting to market to market changes is important, and extension of information exchange of the Korea-China trade should be promoted in line with new turning point. Gyeonggi-do needs support to expand opportunities for SMEs to access markets in China.
The implications of this paper are as follows. First, Gyeonggi-do should expand market access opportunities and two-way exchange projects between local governments and the economy for exchange and cooperation with China. Second, It is necessary to strengthen the functions of GBC installed in China to expand the discovery and introduction functions of local buyers, strengthen the exhibition and promotion functions of SME products exported by Gyeonggi-do. Third, Korea-China trade will be reorganized around the a new corporate ecosystem in the future, and Gyeonggi-do’s economic strategy is very important as it enhance capabilities to expand economic exchanges. Fourth, Gyeonggi-do, local governments in China, and the Chamber of Commerce and Industry participate in cooperative relationships, and it is necessary to expand exchanges such as businessman-centered seminars and fairs in both regions.
