This study examines how BTS" ESG activities have been reported in the Korean media during the period of surging the topic. Specifically, it investigates which areas the media focuses on among ESG"s three areas, the Environment, Society, and Governance. In addition, this study looks at whether the areas where the general public considers important and the reports on BTS works that are consistent. This study also analyzed and compared articles from BTS and other entertainment companies, namely SM, YG, and JYP Entertainment. ESG articles from entertainment companies and general companies were also analyzed and compared. The articles were extracted through Big Kinds for about two and a half years from January 1, 2020 to May 31, 2022.
As a result of the study, BTS" ESG articles far outnumbered other entertainment companies. The order of the the volume of articles was BTS, SM, YG, and JYP Entertainment.
In BTS" ESG articles, social articles were the most common. SM had the most articles related to governance, YG had the environment, and JYP had the most articles related to society. In the case of general companies, the amount of articles related to the environment and governance was similar.
Previous studies reveal that companies need to improve S in order to develop ESG in balance. The results show that the reported ESG activities of the other entertainment companies and general companies analyzed in this study does not match with the public demands thus few benefits on company values are expected.
