This paper attempts to analyze directionality of consonant harmony in English within the framework of Surface Correspondence Theory. Consonant harmony is manifested by the default status of regressive directionality and the stem-control pattern. Rose & Walker(2004) suggested encoding directionality in Ident-CC constraints. However, Hansson(2010) argues that if regressive directionality is assumed in Corr-CC constraints, there will be no need to stipulate directionality in Ident-CC constraints and such stipulations cause confusion in the interpretation of directionality. After reviewing suggestions of Rose & Walker(2004) and Hansson(2010), this work proposes analyzing directionality of consonant harmony with the constraints that represent traits of directionality of consonant harmony. Specifically, this work suggests that the CC-Anchor-R constraint and the SA-Ident[F] constraint should be used, along with other relevant constraints. Traits of directionality of consonant harmony are closely related to the two constraints. The analysis done with these constraints has more explanatory power in that traits of directionality of consonant harmony are well-represented in the constraints and their ranking.
