Previous studies have shown that cultural heritage can positively impact social capital, such as trust, participation, and networks amongst village residents. However, the impacts of cultural heritage are not always positive and vary distinctly according to the economic, social and cultural status of residents. More specifically, migrants who are not successfully involved in the community may not benefit from heritage sites and heritage-related activities, unlike existing residents. Thus, this study focuses on cultural heritage from the perspective of migrants to explore the interrelationships between cultural heritage, migrants, and the social capital of communities within the rural villages of South Korea. Migrants are categorised into rural migrants, international marriage migrants and foreign migrant workers. One hundred forty-five completed questionnaires were collected from adult residents of five selected villages. The resulting quantitative data were analysed using the IBM Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) 21.0 and the R programming language to perform a multiple regression analysis. The study found that tangible cultural heritage is negatively correlated with participation, suggesting that tangible cultural heritage might strengthen the role of existing residents in the exclusion of migrants, thereby adversely affecting the overall level of participation. In addition, foreign migrant workers negatively influence the trust variable, whereas international marriage migrants negatively affect the networking variable, implying that their exclusive communities might affect social capital. This study suggests the need for policy efforts to enable foreign migrant workers and international marriage migrants to be successfully integrated into their local communities and promote social capital within rural villages in South Korea.
