This study examines “The Armed City” by Denji Kuroshima. Kuroshima (1898-1943) was a Japanese proletarian writer. However, he is a unique figure among Japanese proletarian writers, and it can be said that he is a representative writer of anti-war literature. Above all, the literature of Kuroshima expands the area of Japanese literature to encompass China and Russia. Kuroshima’s work is set in Russia in a series of Siberian works, such as “Swirling Crows” and “Sleigh”, and in China in “The Armed City.” “The Armed City” is a turning point in Japanese anti-war literature. with Kuroshima taking on an ambitious challenge in this work. “The Armed City” was published in November 1930, but was immediately banned after its release. In this study, first, the Jinan incident, which constitutes the historical background of the novel, is investigated. Also, the relationship between Chinese factory workers and Japanese managers at the Bokryung Match Company in this work are examined. War accompanies slaughter and plunder. When war breaks out, there is always plunder, requisition, and murder. The only people who benefit from war are the capitalists. Ordinary citizens lose their homes, lose their families, flee, and become victims of war. The damage of war is fully suffered by the people of both countries. In particular, the weak, such as farmers, workers, women, and children, are completely harmed. Everyone is a victim, and it can be said that a war for capitalists is meaningless. This war was, as the enlisted soldiers said, ‘the bad war’.
