Biliary atresia is a rare disease that occurs in infancy, describing complete obstruction of bile flow owing to the destruction or absence of all or part of the extrahepatic bile ducts. The etiology of biliary atresia remained unclear. Clinically, the disease is characterized by obstructive jaundice, dark urine, pale yellow (acholic) stools, hepatosplenomegaly, pruritus, skin xanthomas, steatorrhea, and high-flow cardiac murmur. The effects of this disease on a child’s oral development usually include green discoloration and occasional hypoplastic defects of the teeth, as well as bleeding problems. Currently, biliary atresia is best managed by hepatic portoenterostomy with or without liver transplantation. A 9-year-old girl with biliary atresia experienced esthetic discomfort related to the presence of irregularities and discoloration in her anterior incisors. Dental history and clinical examination revealed that she had a form of enamel hypoplasia and very poor oral hygiene, which resulted in chronic periodontitis and multiple dental caries. She was treated multiple times under nitrous oxide and oxygen inhalation sedation or general anesthesia, and composite resin restorations could improve the appearance and uniformity of the teeth, improving patient self-esteem. A correct diagnosis of lesion depth would be necessary for establishing treatment plan and to ensure successful short- and longterm outcomes.
