The so-called “Seohae Oh-do(西海五島),” which can be translated as the “Five Islands in the Peninsula’s Western Waters,” is usually deemed nowadays as the final line of defense, and the ultimate front-line in the South/North Korean stalemate. Countless military clashes have broken out in this area on the sea, and tragically, young soldiers on both sides had to lose their precious lives in the wake of such conflicts. And due to such clashes, residents in the region even had to become refugees for the first time ever since the Korean War.
Even though the South and North Korean relationship managed to improve over the years, the Cold War sentimentality and most importantly animosity are still present on the West Sea. Agreements from the South & North Korean Summits in 2007 and 2018 succeeded in bringing back welcome peace to the region, but with the relationship between the two Koreas recently deteriorating once again, effectively nullified was the good will and effect that came from those agreements. The five islands as well as regions in the vicinity reverted to their former state, and again became the front-line, sparking with conflicts and competition. At this juncture, fundamental plans and ways to bring everlasting peace to the region should be actively pursued and conceived.
With that in mind, this author would like to take notice of the fact that conflicts throughout this region originated not right after the Korean War or during the Cold War period, but relatively recently, during the 1990s. Conflicts of course had broken out during the Cold War period as well, but the region(or the whole situation) only recently got tied with the notion of security, which led to the creation of an image of a Maritime demarcation line in the area. Understanding of how such notion and image was created in the first place, and how it later evolved, would hopefully help us break free from certain idolizations entangled with the past, and inspire us to plan for peace.
