This research attempts to explore the tasks of rural sociology by reviewing recent research trends in rural sociological field. This effort reflects the question of what should be the social role of rural sociologists. I would argue that researchers in rural sociology should engage in searching for alternatives to overcome the current sustainability crisis. I introduced the birth and trajectory of rural sociology in the West and its development in the 1970s and 80s, which was followed by theoretical fragmentation and differentiation. I analyzed rural sociological journals in the U.S., Europe, and South Korea from 2019 to 2021. The analysis found that environment/disaster and female/gender issues are very popular in the West, while environmental issue was less researched in South Korea. In South Korea, social values such as sustainability, justice, and resilience are quite frequently studied. In terms of method, qualitative researches were popular in all 3 regions. Compared to other social science fields, the percentage of female authors were relatively high. As a final comment, I argued that environment, inequality, and gender issues needed to be more deeply studied by Korean scholars. I recommended that rural sociologists should play an active role in constructing and implementing sustainability project to overcome the current symptoms of socio•ecolocial crisis.
