The repeated insecticides application in the agricultural practice often results in the undesired development of resistance. In some cases, selection of the insecticides belonging to different classes to slow down the development process would not be possible if the numbers of insecticides registered for certain crops or animals are limited, leaving no choice but to increase the concentration of active ingredients or the frequency of application. This will lead to the increase in the production/purchase costs of commercial insecticides, illegal use by overdosing than allowed, or even adverse effect on the environments, along with humans and wild animals. Research on synergistic effect would be beneficial since it can reduce the amounts of insecticide usage. Plant extracts and essential oils are complex mixtures of various constituents, which sometimes exhibit complicated interaction among the constituents. They are frequently reported to be synergistic not only among the constituting compounds but also to synthetic insecticides. Several synergistic mechanisms were proposed to elucidate the underlying enhanced bioactivity, including the increase of cuticular penetration, multiple modes-of-action, or inhibition of detoxifying metabolism. Several studies provide supporting evidence, while others seem not clearly explaining the synergistic interaction.
