In this study, the financial damages experienced by North Korean defectors were explored in terms of financial literacy, such as financial awareness, knowledge, financial behavior, and attitude. They have weak financial literacy due to the lack of economic and financial education and lack of sound financial life, including bank transactions. This research has shown that some North Korean defectors became trapped in a cycle of financial damage and harm by suffering repeated financial damage not only in the early stages of settlement but also more than a decade later, while others slowly develop their economic and financial capabilities and lead a stable economic life. The financial damage to North Korean defectors hinders their settlement in South Korea and stable economic lives, and aggravates economic and psychological suffering. Moreover, it also acts as a factor that causes serious psychosocial phenomena to them.
As a way to improve North Korean defectors" economic and financial capability, this paper suggests the importance of economic and financial education, the need for financial fraud and crime prevention education, the urgency of introducing a financial counselor system, and reconsideration of the role of leaders or middle managers working for North Korean defectors" settlement.
