The purpose of this study is to explore the meaning and value of Korean sports history and education by examining the traces that were overlooked in the life of Hong Soo-Hwan. More specifically, the study looks in depth into the unbeatable legend’s “Fall down four times, Get up five” career that left a record in the history of professional boxing in Korea.
The data collection for this study was collected from September 7, 2020 to March 25, 2021. 1:1 in-depth interviews, that lasted 3 hours each over a total of 6 times, were conducted through semi-structured questionnaires. Out of the 178 categories, the collected data were then classified into 4 categories and 8 subcategories. In order to verify the accuracy of the original data and to minimize the researcher"s bias, a professor who is an expert in this specific field verified the validity of the data.
The results gathered from this study are based on the life of Hong Soo-Hwan, who won the integrated two-weight world title as the World Boxing Association (WBA) Bantam weight World Champion and the first World Boxing Association Junior Featherweight World Champion. The results are as follows: first, learned how to box through his father, a passionate fan of the sport as a child. Second, his debut match, which was secretly arranged due to his mother’s opposition, was disreputable but an opportunity to open a splendid prelude as a boxer. Third, he made up for his lack of experience, physical defect, and technical shortcomings through strenuous efforts. Last, by winning the titles of the OBF Oriental Bantam weight Champion, the WBA Bantam weight World Champion, and the first Junior Featherweight World Champion, he left a mark on Korea"s professional boxing history.
