This study attempted to reveal the mix of traditional and Western clothes by comparing the clothes shown in the modern Japanese novel “Konjikiyasya” around 1900 and the adapted novel 『Janghanmong』 in the 1910s by each character. As 『Konjikiyasya』 was modified into 『Janghanmong』, there were some differences in the character setting and plot. The difference reflects the cultural differences between Korea and Japan at the time because the writer fit the Korean situation. Because the writer understands the Korean situation in depth, the cultural differences between Korea and Japan at the time were reflected in the 『Janghanmong』. If the mixed aspect of traditional and Western clothes were considered, then traditional clothes were the mainstream, and Western styles were introduced as accessories such as hairstyles and hats. Western clothes were worn on special occasions, especially when social status, education, and occupation, were established. There was no difference at this point between Korea and Japan. Education and occupations related to wearing Western clothes are modern, and Western clothes were worn to express this. In addition, Western clothes were worn if it is related to modern and Western things. Expressing special characters through Western clothes was possible because it was not common to wear Western clothes at the time. Although this study is only a limited case study of a novel and its adaptation, it was able to glimpse one aspect of modern clothing culture. The significance of this study is to present the mix of traditional and Western clothes in detail and to reveal the cultural differences between Korea and Japan at the time.
