Depending on the socio-cultural background, gender roles and the color association have been changed. The purpose of this study is to examine gender-neutral color characteristics according to gender roles by generation and the changes in the color association from the past to the present. The research was conducted using the four colors of Bluish, Pink-Liliaceous, Yellowish-Reddish, and Greenish, as well as White, Gray and Black as per Light-Main-Dark tones targeting men and women in their 20s to 4050s. The findings of the study are as follows: First, gender-neutral color showed differences by generation and gender, and the younger the age, the wider the gender-neutral color range. Gender-neutral colors were affected by both tone and color. Second, gender roles appeared differently according to generation. The less clear the gender role, the wider the choice of gender-neutral colors. Third, gender role differed according to generation, and the group in 4050s generally followed conservative gender role, showing significant differences by generation. Therefore, it was confirmed that the gender-neutral colors appeared differently depending on generation - gender and the differences according to gender roles were affected when selecting gender-neutral colors. However, the color association between generations and genders can coexist with their boundaries crossing each other so it cannot be defined in one way. Instead it can be continuously changed by various social factors.
