Global energy consumption and greenhouse gas (GHGs) emissions are gradually increasing, and this is getting worse due to the use of fossil fuels [1]. The fossil fuels produce the energy, but they also contribute to environmental degradation by releasing pollutants that cause the air pollution and destroy the environment. This inevitable increase of energy consumption and environmental degradation are identically occurring in the building sector. In this context, the utilization of water source can be a possible solution to reduce the energy consumption and emissions. The use of thermal energy in water sources requires the consideration of the thermal potential estimation and energy utilization method. However, there are limited studies on the thermal potential estimation and utilization of water sources, despite the increasing interest in water sources worldwide. Therefore, this study aims to review the method of estimating thermal potential of water sources and utilizing the energy. In the section of potential estimation, the potential was classified into theroretical, geographical, environmental, techicnal, and temporal potential, and the considerations necessary for calculating the thermal potential were provided. In the section of energy utilization, the system configuration for effective use of thermal energy was presented. The functions and roles of each component included in the system were explained, and the variables that has a great influence on the performance of the water soure system were discussed comprehensively.
