The purpose of this study is to interpret land use transition in an urban center of Korea from an ecological point of view. To that end, this study attempts to clarify how ecological theories can serve as a useful tool in analyzing the spatial structure of urban centers. The land use pattern of retail businesses shows an aggregation pattern that forms a line along the major road sides. The pattern is referred to as a linear pattern. Restaurant businesses have shown tonal aggregations in inner districts. It is remarkable that there appears to be a natural tendency to form many such specialized areas among manufacture. It is hoped that this study can stimulate debate on a desirable form for urban centers in Korea by providing a rational basis for comparison. In particular, a study on the process by which residential areas are transformed into commercial areas will contribute to our urxferstarx3ing of respective roles played by residential and commercial districts as well as in grasping the spatial structure of urban centers.
