The large-scale immigration of Korean people to Australia began in mid 1970s. Korean living areas in Metropolitan Sydney have spread from the inner city to the Outer Ring along the City Rail Lines. By mid 1980s, many Korean immigrants had already settled in Canterbury and Ashfield. Korean established Koreatowns in the vicinities of Campsie and Strathfield Rail Station. Since mid 1980s, a large number of new Korea-born migrants in business category have immigrated to the West and North Sydney Middle Ring. New smaller sized Koreatowns were established at Eastwood and Chatswood. Korean immigrants seldom live in the West and South Outer Ring, the areas farther than 201an from the Central Business District. Korean immigrants have formed two disparate habitations in north and south of Metropolitan Sydney, and this dichotomy results from the difference in socio-economic characteristics and migration types. The degree of residential segregation between the old migrants and the new migrants of Korean immigrants in Australia is greater than that of other Western Europe nations but smaller than that of other Asian countries. One of the factors that has affected the residential segregation between the two groups is the social distance between the new and old migrants of Korean in the Korean Community in Sydney.
