Japan has been one of the main countries which we have selected for our the long term project titled "Correct Introduction of Korea" which was begun early 1980s. I have tried for this study to compare the contents on Korea in the newly-developed Japanese high school geography textbooks with those in old textbooks. For more objective comparison, we chose textbooks which were written by the same authors and/or publishers. The old textbooks were published in the early 1980s, whereas the new ones were issued in 1994s. The results are as follows; 1) Geographical names concerning nation: Either old or new textbooks use incorrect names such as Chosun, Chosun Peninsula and Yi-dynasty. These names should be written as `The Republic of Korea`(Dae-Han-Min-Kook), Korea(Han) Peninsula and Chosen-dynasty. 2) Comparison of South Korea with North Korea: In old textbooks, the contents were introduced for a favor of North Korea or at most equally for both sides, but in new textbooks, industrial development of South Korea is described in detail and the contents on North Korea are decreasing or even not included. 3) Consciousness of Korea`s industrial development: New textbooks are likely to emphasize the industrial development. Nevertheless they give an emphasis on the Japanese technical and financial help to Korea`s development. 4) The name of the East Sea: There is no change in writing the name of the East Sea. All the textbooks use the unfair name Sea of Japan for the Fast Sea. It doesn`t make sense that the sea surrounded by Korea, Russia and Japan has been called as Sea of Japan. 5) Clothing, dinning, housing and living culture of Koreans`: Some textbooks by a few publishers introduce various aspects of Korean culture such as `Kimchee`, `Ondol`, `Tradition of taking off shoes indoors`, `A system of paternity`, `Chima-Jogori(Korean traditional costume), and `A culture of rice-centered meal`. 6) Living of Korean-Japanese: Some textbooks include some distorted contents such as contempt of Korean culture and inferiority of Korean-Japanese. But some other ones introduce the active living attitudes of Korean-Japanese including their request for political rights. 7) Understanding the value of Hang`ul: Some textbooks describe the relationship between Korean alphabet `Hang`ul` and Chinese character as same as those of Japanese character `Gatma` and Chinese one. 8) The amount of pages on Korea: The amount for Korea content is generally increased except a few textbooks.
